2026 | Cock-of-the-Walk | 2 Ball Matchplay

One of the oldest Championship events at Cabramatta Golf Club, the Cock-of-the-Walk Matchplay is a 2 Ball Best Ball handicapped matchplay event. It is played using a nett stroke format with the best nett result winning the hole.

Based on results of the qualifying 2 Ball Par event on Saturday 11 July 2026, the top sixteen (16) qualifying pairs are taken from the overall leaderboard. Each qualifying team will be contacted prior to the draw being published to ensure their availability for the 4 weeks of resulting matches. Where a team is not available for the first round, then the next available pairing will be progressed to their place.

In the case that one team member is unable to play in either the quarter/semi/finals, then the remaining team member is entitled to play against the opposing team subject to the original conditions of play. Where that teams progressing to the quarterfinals are unable to play, default matches will be awarded.

How does handicap matchplay work?

All four (4) players have their Daily Handicap (based on GA Handicap, Course & Slope Ratings). The lowest handicapper plays at scratch (0). Strokes are then applied on the lowest-indexed holes using the matchplay index.

For example:

Using the above example, the shots each player receives against the Cabramatta Golf Club match play index are as folllows:

For more information on how the Matchplay Index was calculated, please refer to Golf Australia Recommendations – Course Management, Marking the Course, & Course Set-up Procedures

Current Daily handicaps will be used however cannot be higher than used during the qualifying event on Saturday 11 July 2026. To support players, the Committee will calculate handicaps before each match and produce score cards for match record keeping. This will ensure that the correct handicaps are used on the day and comply with event requirements.

Manage my booking

For the qualifying event, players should be booked as pairs (Player 1 & Player 2, and, Player 3 & Player 4) as there will be no “cross-over” groupings during the qualifying 2B Par event. Should you wish to make changes to your booking, please contact the Pro Shop, the Office or the Marshall to make sure the changes are done correctly.

Match Play times are pre-booked by the Committee based on seeding and cannot be changed. The schedule of times appears below under Matchplay Draw. It is recommended that qualifying players still book in for games during the quarter/semi/finals so as not to loose playing opportunity. If the players qualify for a matchplay, the Committee will delete the competition booking and place in the matchplay timeslot.

Playing the Match

Playing from the Championship (“BLUE“) tees, the pair who are seeded highest will have the honour on the first hole. Please be aware that generally furthest first MUST play first. Playing out of turn without authority of your opponent may result in stroke cancellation.

Match play rules in many areas differ to general play (stroke, stableford, par, etc). Key differences are explained in R&A Rule 3.2 Match Play, and R&A Rule 23 Four-Ball. The latter is important to understand the role of partners in the game.

Please note specific to match play

  • a concession is final and cannot be declined or withdrawn (Rule 3.2b(2))
  • a player may practise on the course on the course before a round or between rounds of a match-play competition (Rule 5.2a)
  • generally, the application of the general penalty results in loss of hole in matchplay, whereas a 2-stroke penalty does not.
  • disputes on rules must be decided at the time they occur (with very limited exceptions). When in dispute, please call the Pro Shop and request the Course Marshall to attend.
